Montepulciano

Montepulciano [zoom=12]

Montepulciano is one of the steepest hilltowns in the area.  I put this upfront to let you know to prepare with the right shoes.  Cobble stone streets in winter tend to be icey and heels tend to slip.  There is an answer, however…park at the top, walk down (don’t forget to stop at the various cantinas to taste this years Vino Nobile) and take the electric bus back up.

That said, it is well worth a visit.  San Biagio is a magnificent cathedral set on a grassy knoll with landscapes on three sides.  It rivals the Papal Cathedral in Pienza and was built as direct competition…centuries ago.

For something truly  unique, time your visit at the end of August to watch two man teams run (and I mean run!) uphill to the top of the town rolling oak wine casks in front of them.  Alternatively, May 1st is a lovely celebration with the largest market around, numerous rides and games…and FOOD!.
